University of Minnesota - Communications Coordinator

Minimum/Essential Qualifications:

A bachelor's level education with specialization in English, journalism, or a related field, and one year experience in the communications field. Additional equivalent work experience may be substituted for the degree.
Experience with technical and/or science writing.
Experience in using publication, word processing, graphics and design, and Power Point software packages.
Experience writing for the web for a variety of audiences.
Demonstrated experience in transforming written and oral communication into language appropriate for websites and other communication pieces.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous projects and activities.
Academic environment experience.

Fundraising/development experience.
Ability to work within a budget and on tight deadlines.


The Communications Coordinator is the primary contact for public relations for the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA). The coordinator will work with our various constituencies to articulate and promote our mission and numerous accomplishments.

Written and Electronic Communications (60 %)

Write and edit copy for all types of print and electronic publications including posters, brochures, invitations, and flyers.

Write, edit, and coordinate production of IMA publications including the annual report.

Coordinate the design and graphic layout of print and electronic communications including performing basic image editing using graphic or desktop publishing software.

Research, write and edit content for stories highlighting the success of the IMA.

Arrange for photography of IMA events and of IMA visitors Write and edit copy of current news stories for IMA website.

Write and send out monthly e-newsletters

Update and post information to the IMA website as needed.

Create and maintain social media presence.

Publicity/Marketing (30 %)

Assist in the development of effective PR/marketing plans for the IMA to increase visibility and support organizational activities.

Assist in media relations activities including developing and making story pitches.

Develop and implement methods for distribution of publicity materials including maintaining mailing lists and coordinating with Printing Services.

Other duties (10 %)

Collaborate with College of Science and Engineering communicators to promote IMA events and activities.

Collaborate with College of Science and Engineering External Relations team.

Collaborate with University Relations and the University of Minnesota Foundation

Assist staff as needed with special events
