University of Minnesota - Communications Specialist

Required/Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or a related field plus at least two (2) years of relevant professional experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in journalism, public relations or communications totaling at least six (6) years.
Demonstrated ability to effectively pitch and earn placement of news stories in print and electronic media. 

Experience with/understanding of social media as a tool in strategic public relations.

Excellent written and oral communication skills and an entrepreneurial attitude are essential. Also needed are sound news judgment, the ability to develop and execute communications strategies, experience in issues management and the ability to prioritize, follow through and work independently under tight deadlines. Knowledge of video and other multimedia is a plus.
The News Service media relations representative will:

--Work with university communicators to identify and publicize news, accomplishments and achievements that advance the reputation of the institution;
--Maintain professional, productive relationships with the media;
--Manage print, broadcast and online internal and external news inquiries;
--Manage outreach within the University to cultivate additional faculty experts;
--Create, develop and implement communications strategies (including evaluation metrics) for university initiatives and projects;
-Provide public relations services to university clients;
--Collaborate with other University Relations staff to maximize exposure for stories via other communications assets (e.g. university web site, social media, internal communications, etc.)
--Develop and write news releases, opinion editorials and other media materials;
--Work with student workers to develop, edit and manage distribution of "Today's News" to internal and external stakeholders. 
Program/Unit Description
The Media Relations Representative works for the University News Service. The News Service is the primary public relations office for the University of Minnesota and the initial point of access for local, national and international media. The media relations professional is responsible for identifying and placing news stories as part of comprehensive public relations strategies for a range of University clients.
1. Reports to the Director of Public Relations
2. The News Service is a part of University Relations, the central public relations and marketing department of the University of Minnesota
3. Develop and maintain strong, positive working relationships with University staff, administrators, college communicators and also members of the media.
