Explore Minnesota Tourism - INFORMATION OFFICER 3

To promote Minnesota as a travel destination through the development of strategic communications programs, including travel publications, website content and social media interactions aimed at consumers/travelers, as well as communications targeted to the Minnesota tourism businesses and organizations. Research and write original content for website, publications, electronic communications and social media, and occasionally edit writing of other Tourism staff or other content contributors. Coordinate publication production with graphic designers and printers as needed, under direction of Communications Manager. As needed, assist in responding to media inquiries for travel information. This writer/editor position is part of the communications team implementing an integrated communications program that expands marketing to attract travelers to our state and increases the awareness of the tourism industry.

Job Duties:

1. Oversee content and write copy for the travel marketing website Coordinate with other staff to keep website up-to-date and relevant to consumer needs. Assist with content of additional Explore MN websites and other electronic communications.
2. Develop content and coordinate production of annual editions of a comprehensive statewide travel guide.
3. Coordinate editorial development of consumer travel publications produced by EMT or through partnerships with private publishers.
4. Develop electronic information and/or print materials directed to Minnesota's tourism businesses and organizations.
5. Handle media relations, as needed, to promote Minnesota tourism and develop awareness of value of the tourism industry.

Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Mass Communications, or closely-related field.


Three years professional experience in positions with a high level of responsibility for developing communications for the public, including: writing materials such as brochures, articles, newsletters, news releases and web content; editing materials others have written; and coordinating production of publications, from planning through printing.

2. Publication production: Describe your experience in planning and developing publications, including writing, editing, supervising graphic design and production. Outline your responsibilities in this area using two examples.

3. Editing: Describe your experience in editing materials others have written.

Five or more years experience in developing communications projects, including publications.

Experience in writing on travel-related topics, including articles on destinations, outdoor recreation, arts and culture, or other leisure activities.

Experience in production of publications, directing the work of graphic designers, freelance writers, printers and other outside vendors to produce materials.

Demonstrated skills in working collaboratively with other staff, management and external parties.

Experience in media relations, including developing key messages and conducting interviews with broadcast and print media.

Experience managing multiple complex projects with tight timelines.

Familiarity with the travel industry and with Minnesota tourism destinations and products.
